What You Should Know When Buying a DVD Recorder

DVD recorders enable writing content into DVDs or Digital Video Disks. There are a large variety of DVD recorders, equipped with different kinds of abilities. Most of them are versatile and can even play the DVDs. Some of them offer enhanced features for recording quality content. There are many more aspects that need to be considered when buying a DVD recorder. Here are a few of them:-

Recording Format

DVDs are available in different formats. They are:-

DVD±R – A DVD that allows recording or writing on it just once.

DVD±RW – A DVD that is rewritable. You can write on it, or erase and rewrite, many number of times.

DVD-RAM – Such a DVD also allows multiple recording and erasing. It differs from DVD±RW in that it will play only on those players that support the DVD-RAM format. The DVD±RW and DVD±R can be played by most of the commercial DVD players.

Earlier, DVD recorders offered just a single-format recording. However, these days most of these devices come with multi-format recording ability. The single format recorders are cheaper than the multi-format recorders.

Front Panel Control or Remote Control

Some of the recorders have a front panel control, while others come with a remote control. Then again, there are some that offer both kinds of controls.

Interfaces

A variety of ports and sockets are made available in the recorders to enable connecting to various other devices. Here is a list of the commonly available ports:-

HDMI – this port allows connecting to a High Definition Television.

USB – this port supports interfacing with a laptop or PC.

FireWire – this is specific to Apple products, like MacBooks and the Mac computers. It allows exchanging data just like the USB, but is faster.

Ethernet – some recorders also allow connecting to the internet via wired Ethernet connectivity.

Memory card slot or hard drive – you can store ample data on integrated hard drives or on memory cards.

Internal Dolby Digital Recording

Some of the high-end recorders integrate the ability to record Dolby Digital surround sound. This supports 6 discrete channels of audio recording, for front-right, front-left, rear-right, rear-left, centre and one for subwoofer or low frequency effects. DVDs recorded with this format can make for enjoyable surround sound entertainment.

Time Lapse Feature

Certain recorders can be connected to the TV directly, for recording live TV shows. Therefore, you needn't miss your favourite game, in case you have to attend an important phone call, right in the middle of it. Then again, the Time Lapse feature in some of these devices, allows you to continue seeing the live programme right from the beginning when its recording is still in progress.

Depending upon your budget and requirements, you can either choose a simple DVD recorder or one with all the enhanced abilities.
