Glossary

DVD recorders found everywhere are available either as a drive for computers or standalone device.  They record videos and audios ensuring superior quality in both.

Glossary terms are
ANALOG MEDIA
This holds and plays the audio and video signals. Also they are played in original form which will be reproduced by analog wave.

ARCHIVE
Archive is the collection of recordings which can be analog or digital.

AUDIO_TS
This indicates the root directory of the audio track in a DVD.

AUTHORING
Process of creating a movie on DVD support.

BANDWIDTH
Bandwidth is the range of frequencies within which a device operates.

BURN
Recording of data to a DVD disc. Data can be audio, video, images, graphics etc.

BLUE RAY
It’s the next generation optical disc format which has the capability of storing more than 5 times the present one. Also it uses different laser wave length. They are designed for HDTVs.

CABLE BOX CONTROL
Some DVD recorders can control cable boxes, for example, to turn them on and switching to right station to record according to schedule.

CHASING PLAYBACK

This feature allows users to view the recording of the beginning while the unit finish recording.

CHROMINANCE
Chrominance is the color information of video signal describing the images vividness and color shade.

COMPATIBILITY

Compatibility has to checked if the disc I to be played on other devices.

COMPONENT VIDEO
It’s an interface between source of a video signal and a video display. The 3 RCS jacks is used which carry three distinct color component signals namely (red, green, blue) RGB. The picture quality is far better than normal one. However only few TV displays has component inputs.

CONTENT SCRAMBLING SYSTEM
This is an encoding scheme or form that prevents commercial DVDs from being copied.

CONSTANT ANGULAR VELOCITY
One of the recording styles where laser moves at same speed over disc surface from center to the end of the disc. Same amount of information is written on every rotation.

CONSTANT LINEAR VELOCITY
This velocity maintains a constant data transfer rate for the entire disc. Also it sets the disc’s rotation in accordance with the head of the recorder when they read or write from inner to outer diameter.

CONSTANT BIT RATE
Every recorded frame will be allocated the same amount of data. Hence image quality will vary according to recording complexity.

DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER
This recorder records digital video stream from a source and stores them in a hard disc drive. Most popular DVR is TiVo box.

DE-INTERLACING
This converts interlaced video signal to a progressive scan signal.

DOLBY DIGITAL
It is the standard surround sound format which consists of 5 discrete channels and outputs full frequency sound. Deep bass frequencies are done by sixth channel.

DOUBLE SIDED DISC
This disc can record data on both sides thereby having double storing capacity.

DOWNMIX
Downmix converts multichannel audio program to fewer channels. The DVD players can downmix the soundtrack to two-channel analog stereo if surround sound audio system is not supported.

DUAL-LAYER DISC
Here 2 layers of data are recorded on the same side where second layer can be accessed with a change in laser-beam’s angle.

DUPLICATION
Recording small quantity of DVD discs with a dedicated recorder.

DVD
DVD is the acronym for Digital Versatile Disc. This media which stores digital data is used in all types of DVD devices. They have longer life-span, random access and better video and audio quality.

ELECTRONIC PROGRAMMING GUIDE
It’s a TV guide that helps to program recordings by titles, ratings, actors cast etc.

FINALIZATION
This process marks unused portions of the disc as not recordable. It takes less time to do this. This is done if the recorded disc is to be played in a device other then recorded device. This will be available as a MENU option or with a press of a button.

FIREWIRE
It is the standard for transmitting digital data between peripherals and recorder.

FIRST PLAY
This option denotes the first element to be played when a disc is inserted.

HARD DRIVE
This is a built-in component used to store data. Storing capacity can scope from 40 to 400 GB.

HDTV
HDTV stands for High Definition Television. This produces or displays image with better resolution which is as twice as conventional TV. They double the vertical and horizontal resolution lines.

MPEG
Moving Picture Experts Group.  This standard is used to compress video files which ensure high quality.

MP3
The widely used format for compressing audio files.

PANASONIC
Panasonic is worldwide manufacturer of electronic products. They create ideas for life which is well revealed in their products. Through their innovative ideas they enrich customers’ life.

PARENTAL LOCK
This feature allows users to set passwords for recorded data which is done with remote control.

RESOLUTION

Resolution denoted the width and height of the data recorded by the device. Resolutions are measured in pixels.

SDTV

SDTV is the acronym for Standard Definition Television which outputs an image with a resolution of 700 x 480 pixels.

TOSHIBA
Toshiba is a renowned manufacturer of DVD recorders. Because of their ingenious innovations their products are rated higher. Also they operate globally with number of models designed to use with ease.

TIME SLIP
It is the capability to pause a live show and also watch the recording even if the unit is still recording the show.

TIME SHIFT
This is the ability of the recorder to switch channels automatically for recording various shows.
This is done by IR blaster.

TiVo
TiVo is a TV receiver box which lets user o watch the recordings of shows which are broadcast at odd hours.

VARIABLE BIT RATE
This scheme allocates more resources on the disc and hence image quality remains constant.

ZONED CONSTANT LINEAR VELOCITY

It divides the disc into regions and for each region progressive faster CLV writing speed is applied.
